Home Alarm Systems Problems

Home security is a very important issue to all homeowners. It can give you peace of mind in knowing that you and your family are safe. It is also a good way to receive a reduction in homeowners insurance. However, there are things can sometimes go wrong, and many of these things can be avoided. Here is a look at some common home alarm systems problems and ways to avoid or fix them. Signal Problems There are several things that may prevent signals from your system, from getting to the switch board.
The first thing to do is check the phone line. Pick up the telephone and see if there is a dial tone. Also, check the phone line going to the unit. Make sure it is plugged in and if possible try another phone cord. If this does not work, you should call your customer service number and let them know that something is wrong. VOIP Phone Lines Sometimes digital telephones can cause trouble with your system. VOIP or Internet phones use a digital signal and land line phones employ analog signals. Many systems are designed to be used with land line phones. The digital signal will need to be converted to an analog signal to make it to the central system or switchboard. This can cause communication problems and sometimes, no signal may be transferred at all.

Another problem with digital phones, is they will not work when your power is off. Your alarm unit should have backup power, but your broadband modem does not normally have backup power. In order to prevent this situation, get a backup power unit for your modem and router. It is always best to check with alarm companies before you buy, if you have digital phone service. You may be able to use radio transmission or cell phone transmission, instead of normal phone service. This will usually cost extra, but it may solve any connection problems that you may have with digital phone service. Wired and Wireless Systems Wireless systems can sometimes be triggered by outside interference. Anything that uses radio signals, like garage door openers or passing police cars, may cause false alarms. These situations may be difficult to spot, as you may be unaware what is causing the false alarm. However, a wireless system may be more secure than wired. An intruder may instantly spot a wired system and simply unplug the phone line or tear the unit from the wall. A wireless system is much harder to locate than a wired one. However, wired systems are less prone to false alarms and outside interference. A good option, is a wired system that conceals as much of the components as possible. Also, it should not have the control panel in close proximity to the keyboard. This will make it harder for intruders to disable the unit. Installation Installation by a professional service that is reputable may help to prevent many troubles. Always check references before you sign up for any service. Check with your local BBB and ask people that you know for referrals. Summary Many home alarm systems problems can be prevented with a professional installation. It should be a company that you trust and has experience in the business. If you have a digital phone line, it may cause troubles. Ask about compatibility issues before you sign up. A well concealed wired system may be the most secure. When you have troubles, call your customer service number and let them know.
