Traditionally, many homes’ HVAC duct work is constructed of sheet metal however more modern homes have ducts that are constructed with fiberglass duct board or sheet metal that is lined with this material. This material is specifically engineered for use in HVAC systems and has not been shown to give more support to the growth of microbial life that becomes mold or to trap more airborne allergens and debris. Ducts that are bare sheet metal show no significant difference in the amount of dust and other contaminants that can become trapped in the system. While sheet metal ducts can be easier to remedy with air vent duct cleaning procedures, they are not immune to becoming dirty and/or clogged. Air vent duct cleaning is not always necessary on an annual basis however every home is different.
